University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 2003 Recipient of a Fellowship from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation for a four-week residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts 2002 Recipient of a Fellowship Grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts as an established professional After many years of painting watercolors, mostly landscapes, I decided to take the spontaneous and transparent qualities of that medium and combine them with an emphasis on drawing. My new work starts with a loose drawing done with conté crayon on canvas, then painted over with transparent acrylic washes. Unlike watercolors, these paintings are permanent and are displayed without glass. As always, my compositions are meant to hold interest even at a distance before any detail can be visible. I am striving to create a certain tension between the sketchy quality of the line and the fluid brush strokes of the paint. I am also putting people into many of my landscapes to bring viewers more intimately into the scenes.
